The Stock Exchange of Mauritius closed Thursday July 23 on a cautiously positive note, with the SEMDEX gaining 5.72 points to reach 2,272.58 points — continuing a bullish momentum that began in late June.

A positive closing session

At the close of trading this Thursday, Mauritius's benchmark index stood at 2,272.58 points, a gain of 5.72 points (+0.25%) from the previous session. Trading volume reached 1,240,472 shares, with a total traded value of Rs 55.6 million. Overall market capitalisation hovered around Rs 302.6 billion.

Building on five consecutive sessions of gains

This progress follows a sustained rally that kicked off in the last week of June: the exchange had then strung together five consecutive sessions of gains, pushing the SEMDEX to 2,218.26 points on June 26, with Rs 287.6 million traded over the week. MCB Group Limited alone accounted for Rs 118.4 million in transactions, ahead of CM Diversified Credit (Rs 49.8M) and SBM Holdings (Rs 18.4M). During that period, Medine Limited stood out with a +11.06% gain, followed by P.O.L.I.C.Y Ltd (+7.74%) and Ascencia Ltd (+5.71%).

A selective market: 14 stocks in the green

The overall tone remains measured: during the previous week, out of 65 listed stocks, 14 advanced, 43 were unchanged, and 8 declined. The profile of the Mauritian market — dominated by financial and hotel stocks — reflects investor caution amid regional macroeconomic uncertainties, notably the IMF's call for Mauritius to reduce its debt and strengthen the independence of the Bank of Mauritius.

Why it matters

The Stock Exchange of Mauritius remains a central barometer of the island's economic health. A sustained upward momentum, driven by major banking stocks like MCB Group, signals relative investor confidence despite an uncertain global environment. For decision-makers and portfolio managers across the Indian Ocean, these signals guide allocation choices for the second half of 2026. The market's resilience in the face of inflationary pressures and external headwinds is a key indicator to watch in the coming weeks.
