The first African country to achieve the IMF's SDDS+ status in March 2026, Mauritius has taken another major step forward with the launch of BOMStats — a centralised platform giving real-time, open access to the island's economic and financial data.
Unprecedented Transparency for the Indian Ocean
On 4 September 2026, the Bank of Mauritius (BoM) officially launched BOMStats in the presence of Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam and Governor Priscilla Muthoora Thakoor. The platform consolidates the island's full range of economic statistics — monetary indicators, external sector data, financial markets and payment statistics — under a single portal aligned with the international SDMx standard and built on the African Development Bank's Open Data Portal 2.0.
"Data is one of the most precious resources a country can have," declared the Prime Minister at a ceremony that also marked the BoM's 59th anniversary, founded on 1 September 1967. Governor Thakoor described it as "an important milestone in advancing transparency and the timely dissemination of official statistics."
The IMF's Highest Data Standard
The launch follows Mauritius's accession to the IMF's Special Data Dissemination Standard Plus (SDDS+) in March 2026 — the Fund's most demanding tier, requiring central banks to publish regularly in a structured and comprehensive manner. Mauritius is the first African country to reach this level, having joined the standard SDDS in 2012.
Beyond simple consultation, BOMStats allows advanced users to access statistical series via API, eliminating manual data extraction. Businesses, researchers and financial institutions can now integrate Mauritian data directly into their models and dashboards. The phased implementation of the System of National Accounts 2025 (SNA 2025) begins this month, with a three-year transition period.
A Broad Institutional Reform
A revision of the Statistics Act is underway to complete the regulatory framework, co-led with the IMF Statistics Department and the African Development Bank, both of which provided technical assistance for BOMStats's development.
Why It Matters
Reliable, accessible data underpins every rational investment decision. By building BOMStats, Mauritius reinforces its position as the Indian Ocean's leading financial hub. The platform boosts foreign investor confidence, supports macro-prudential oversight and places the island on par with the world's most advanced economies in institutional transparency. In an increasingly competitive African financial landscape, this is a meaningful differentiating advantage.
