The Stock Exchange of Mauritius closed the week of July 28 – August 1 on a positive note. The SEMTRI gained 1.14%, lifting the official market capitalisation to Rs 369.4 billion. A reassuring signal for investors as the H1 earnings season approaches.

A week driven by MCB Group and Phoenix Beverages

Of the 65 securities listed on the official market, 16 advanced, 36 held steady and 13 declined. MCB Group Limited was the most actively traded stock of the week, with Rs 98.7 million in transactions — well ahead of CM Diversified Credit Ltd (Rs 21.6 million) and Phoenix Beverages Ltd (Rs 10.6 million).

The week's standout performer was Phoenix Beverages Ltd, surging +11.16% — a notable gain for one of Mauritius's heavyweight agri-food companies. AfreximBank DR followed at +6.92%, and Omnicane Ltd rounded out the top three risers at +5.85%.

On the downside, Innodis Ltd shed -3.88% and IBL Ltd dropped -3.16%, a reminder that stock-picking discipline still matters in a market undergoing gradual re-rating.

Indices on a two-month climb

The SEMDEX closed at 2,292.28 points, up from 2,218.26 on June 24 — a gain of more than 74 points in five weeks. The SEM-10 large-cap index settled at 434.24 points. On the DEM (Development & Enterprise Market), the DEMEX reached 221.50 points, with a combined capitalisation of Rs 31.2 billion.

Total official-market turnover came to Rs 216.2 million — a moderate but seasonally consistent figure. SBM Holdings Ltd (Rs 9.5 million) and ER Group Limited (Rs 9.2 million) rounded out the top-five by volume.

Why it matters

The Stock Exchange of Mauritius is a barometer of economic confidence for the archipelago. A third consecutive positive week reflects renewed appetite from local and regional investors for Mauritius-listed equities, fuelled by the 2026-27 Budget reforms unveiled in June. The SEMTRI's climb from 2,218 to 2,292 points in a month confirms a durable upward trend — which will face its next test in August as listed companies begin releasing half-year results.
