It is the stock market event that will be remembered. Nigeria's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) gave the green light on September 5, 2026 to the IPO of Dangote Petroleum Refinery, the oil complex founded by billionaire Aliko Dangote. The target amount: approximately $1.63 billion (₦2.15 trillion), making it the largest IPO ever recorded in Africa.

A colossal operation

The Dangote Refinery, inaugurated in 2023 in Lagos, is Africa's largest with a processing capacity of 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The IPO values the entire group at approximately $47 billion, according to sources cited by Bloomberg and Reuters. Shares will be listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), with a subscription period expected in October 2026.

Nigeria's SEC validated the roadmap presented by lead banks — Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, and Chapel Hill Denham — after several weeks of review. The operation comes amid a stabilizing naira and a gradual reduction in Nigeria's dependence on imported refined fuel.

A strong signal for African markets

Dangote Petroleum's stock market listing represents far more than a financial operation: it demonstrates the capacity of African capital markets to absorb world-class fundraises. "Such an operation proves that the continent does not need to turn exclusively to London or New York to finance its industrial champions," several analysts interviewed by Financial Afrik noted.

For institutional investors in the Indian Ocean region — Mauritian pension funds, Réunionese asset managers — the Dangote IPO represents a potential entry point into large-cap African energy. The NGX has attracted growing interest from pan-African managers over the past two years.

Why it matters

This historic IPO shifts the center of gravity of African financial markets. It validates the model of locally financed continental heavy industry, and sends a message to regional capital: Africa is now capable of self-financing at scale. In a global environment where investors seek diversification beyond saturated Western markets, the NGX — and behind it, the Indian Ocean markets — gains visibility and credibility.
