First-half 2026 data delivers a clear verdict: in Africa, three sectors now capture the bulk of available venture capital. Fintech, logistics and climate solutions have absorbed the majority of funding, fundamentally redrawing investors' priority map across the continent.

Logistics: The New Queen of African Venture Capital

The defining event of H1 2026 was logistics' spectacular rise. Spiro, the electric-mobility startup operating in Niger, Benin, Rwanda and Ethiopia, raised $320 million — accounting alone for roughly a quarter of all African funding in the period, according to TechInAfrica. This record raise repositioned mobility and transport as venture capital's top recipient, overtaking fintech which had dominated previous years. The thesis: electrify two-wheel fleets across sub-Saharan Africa, targeting delivery workers, small traders and artisans.

Fintech Holds, Climate Rises

Despite logistics' surge, fintech remains the most diversified sector by deal count. Payment services, digital credit and mobile savings continue to attract varied ticket sizes, from seed to Series B. East Africa — Kenya and Ethiopia leading — remains the most active region.

The other major 2026 trend is the rise of climate financing. Startups offering distributed solar energy, climate-adaptive agricultural efficiency or water management are now attracting impact funds and development finance institutions (DFIs). This shift reflects growing alignment between investors' return imperatives and sustainable development goals.

Investment Geography Broadens

While Nigeria, Kenya and Egypt remain the flagship markets, 2026 marks the emergence of a wider investment profile. According to ValueAdd VC's 2026 Country Breakdown, the $2.9 billion in venture capital mobilised across the full year spread across a record number of recipient countries. Ghana, Rwanda, Côte d'Ivoire and even niche markets like Seychelles appear in institutional fund allocations. For investors, 2026 has been the year when "investing in Africa" definitively entered portfolio strategy vocabulary.

Why It Matters

This sectoral reshuffling matters for the Indian Ocean. Startups from La Réunion, Mauritius and Madagascar working in fintech, island logistics or energy transition would be well-advised to plug into these pan-African ecosystems — where capital and networks now flow. The shift toward logistics and climate opens a window of opportunity for regional entrepreneurs whose offerings fit these investment theses.
