[AFRICA] Startup Funding: Q3 2026 Sets Record at $582.8 Million, Up 70% Year-on-Year

African startups raised $582.8 million in Q3 2026, up 70% year-on-year. Over nine months, the ecosystem has accumulated $1.39 billion and is targeting $1.85 billion for the full year. But capital is concentrating: 7 companies capture half of all funds.

The third quarter of 2026 marks a turning point for Africa's tech ecosystem: 58 startups raised a combined $582.8 million between July and September, according to data compiled by AllAfrica and published on October 5, 2026. That is a +70% jump over Q3 2025, which had totalled just $342.2 million.

137 Companies and $1.39 Billion Over Nine Months

Across the first three quarters of the year, 137 African startups raised $1.39 billion. At this pace, the ecosystem is on track to reach $1.85 billion for full-year 2026 — a meaningful rebound after 2024's trough of $1.12 billion. The quarterly split illustrates a building momentum: Q1 at $382 million, Q2 at $260 million, Q3 at $582 million.

Concentration Is Accelerating

Behind the headline figures lies a less flattering reality: deal count has fallen sharply, with 7 companies capturing roughly 50% of total funding. The «spray and pray» era is over. Investors — Sequoia Africa, TLcom Capital, Development Finance Institutions — are tightening their criteria and gravitating toward operators with demonstrated recurring revenue.

Transport and Logistics Overtake Fintech

For the first time in several years, transport and logistics surpassed fintech as Africa's top venture-backed sector in H1 2026. The landmark deal was Spiro, the electric vehicle specialist, which raised $320 million across three consecutive rounds. This sectoral shift reflects the continent's growing infrastructure maturity in mobility and energy.

Why It Matters

This rebound signals structural resilience in Africa's tech ecosystem, even as global interest rates remain elevated. For Indian Ocean entrepreneurs — in Réunion, Mauritius, Madagascar — it is an opportunity signal: continental investors are back, selective but active. Regional startups built on solid revenue models are best positioned to attract this concentrated capital.
