[AFRICA / SOUTH AFRICA] Standard Bank: Record $1.62bn Profit in H1 2026 and $80m Injected into Tanzania

Standard Bank posts a record $1.62bn profit in H1 2026 (+10%), with an 19.8% ROE. The group injects $80m into Tanzania and prepares to increase its Angola stake. A strong signal for African finance.

Standard Bank, Africa's largest financial group by assets, has reported record results for the first half of 2026. Net profit stood at 26.1 billion rand ($1.62 billion), up 10% from H1 2025. Return on equity (ROE) reached 19.8%, confirming the group's ability to deliver high returns even as interest rates decline across the continent.

A Half-Year Driven by Commissions and Trading

Net interest income (NII) grew 4% to 53.2 billion rand, despite compression of the net interest margin (NIM) to 472 basis points from 489 bps in the same period last year — reflecting the lower rate environment across the continent. To offset this, the group benefited from strong commission income, dynamic trading activity, and robust contributions from its corporate and investment banking division.

Personal and private banking and business and commercial banking segments nevertheless faced headwinds in several African markets outside South Africa, due to lower local policy rates.

Continental Expansion Accelerating

Standard Bank is not merely optimising existing performance — the group is investing heavily in geographic growth. In July 2026, it injected $80 million into Tanzania, and is simultaneously moving toward increasing its Angola stake from 51% to 75%, expected in H2 2026.

For the second half, management anticipates improved margins as rate cuts are absorbed into base comparisons, an acceleration in loan production (retail and commercial), and stronger contributions from African markets outside South Africa.

Why It Matters

Standard Bank is a leading indicator of the continent's financial health. Record profits combined with expansion into Tanzania and Angola signal that the African banking sector is absorbing the shift to lower rates and remains attractive to capital. For Indian Ocean countries, Standard Bank's appetite for African emerging markets is an opportunity to seize — particularly for financing regional infrastructure projects.
