The African Energy Week (AEW) 2026, the continent's largest energy gathering, opened its doors in Cape Town on October 12th. Over five days, more than 10,000 delegates from industry, governments and financial institutions are tackling a single challenge: bridging a financing gap estimated at between $31 and $50 billion per year.
An Under-Financed Continent Facing Massive Energy Needs
Africa represents 17% of the world's population but consumes less than 3% of global energy. The needs are enormous, and traditional financing sources — Western development banks, international capital markets — have partly retreated under pressure from fossil fuel divestment policies.
Into this gap steps the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) as a key player. With over $19 billion in assets, the AFC completed several landmark transactions in 2026: a $2.5 billion private placement for Nigeria's Dangote refinery, and the financial close of the Lobito Corridor railway project — linking Zambia, DRC and Angola — at $753 million. It also raised $2 billion through a syndicated loan for its own continental operations.
Africa Energy Bank: A Sovereign Tool for Oil and Gas
Another major announcement at AEW 2026: the Africa Energy Bank, co-created by Afreximbank and the African Petroleum Producers' Organization (APPO), is scaling up. Designed to finance oil and gas projects that Western lenders are increasingly shying away from, it aims to become the financial arm of Africa's energy sector.
AEW sessions also cover renewable energy, power grid digitalisation and cross-border electricity trading — reflecting the energy mix strategy African nations are choosing to pursue, refusing to trade off development for climate transition.
Why It Matters
For Indian Ocean businesses and investors, AEW is the barometer of Africa's major energy decisions. Projects decided in Cape Town this week will shape the continent's investment flows for the coming decade — and with them, the opportunities for players in Mauritius, Réunion or Madagascar involved in infrastructure financing, logistics or engineering.
