The 18th US-Africa Business Summit, scheduled for 26–29 July 2026 in Mauritius, has been officially postponed. The Corporate Council on Africa (CCA) and the Mauritian government cited the WHO's global health emergency declared on 17 May 2026 regarding the Ebola epidemic in Central Africa. New dates have not yet been announced.
A Flagship Event Suspended Four Days Before Launch
Over 2,500 participants were expected in Mauritius — African heads of state, ministers, senior US officials and business leaders from both continents. The 2026 edition was set to be the first time the summit was held in Mauritius, a powerful symbol of Port Louis's repositioning as a diplomatic and economic hub between Africa and the world.
The CCA President stated in an official release: "The safety and well-being of every delegate is our absolute priority." Mauritius's Minister of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed "the country's unwavering commitment to the US-Africa partnership and the mission of strengthening economic ties."
A Postponement, Not a Cancellation
The CCA is clear on this point: the summit is postponed, not cancelled. New dates will be announced "shortly," once the health situation is clarified. The organisation plans to keep Mauritius as the host venue, expressing continued confidence in the island despite the circumstances.
An Immediate Economic Impact for Local Operators
For Mauritian businesses, the postponement carries an immediate cost: luxury hotels, restaurants, transport operators and event management firms had all mobilised significant resources. The island's reputation as a destination for international summits is not in question, but the resilience of its MICE sector (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) is once again being tested.
Why It Matters
The US-Africa Business Summit is one of the most important commercial forums between the United States and the African continent. Hosting it in Mauritius was meant to send a clear signal to American investors about the island's strategic positioning in Africa's economic architecture. The postponement does not undermine that ambition — but it delays the milestone and reopens competition with other African bids for the rescheduled dates.
