At mid-2026, Réunion presents a mixed economic picture: construction and retail under pressure, digital and domestic tourism rising. The recovery remains fragile.

Réunion is entering the second half of 2026 in a mixed economic environment. While INSEE's regional economic survey for Q1 2026 confirms a degree of stabilisation, the recovery that began in 2025 is struggling to consolidate in the face of persistent headwinds.

Construction Under Pressure, Retail Slowing Down

The construction sector is going through a difficult phase. The property market correction — a consequence of rising interest rates — is weighing on housing starts and building permits. Companies in the sector are adjusting their workforces and postponing investments while waiting for credit conditions to normalise.

Retail trade is also feeling the impact of squeezed household purchasing power. Inflation, while retreating from its 2024 peaks, continues to erode day-to-day spending. Local retailers report declining footfall in several commercial zones across the island.

Digital and Tourism: The Engines of Recovery

Against this backdrop, two sectors are holding their own. The digital economy, supported by targeted public investment and an active startup ecosystem, is posting sustained growth. The island's initiatives to accelerate digital transformation among small and medium-sized enterprises are beginning to bear fruit.

Domestic tourism, meanwhile, is benefiting from Réunionnais demand for local experiences. Outdoor activity providers, off-the-beaten-track accommodation and agritourism operators are recording encouraging occupancy rates for this austral summer.

Why It Matters

Réunion is the Indian Ocean's leading overseas island economy. Its economic dynamics directly shape regional trade and tourism flows with Mauritius, Madagascar and the Comoros. A hesitant recovery in Saint-Denis means fewer orders for regional suppliers and fewer Réunionnais visitors across the zone.
