On Thursday 1 October 2026, Réunion Island's Regional Council brought together its economic partners for an unprecedented convention — signalling the official launch of the "New Economy Act II", a 2026–2030 roadmap addressing energy transition, digitisation, industrial modernisation and new environmental requirements.
A track record that sets the ambition
Since 2021, the Regional Council has supported or financed 12,000 businesses, mobilised €115 million across 14 support schemes. These figures were presented as proof that regional public authorities can act as a genuine lever for the local economic fabric — 90% of which consists of micro and small businesses.
Région-CROEC partnership: the cornerstone of the convention
The day's key act: the signing of a partnership agreement between the Region and the Regional Council of the Order of Chartered Accountants (CROEC). The goal is to strengthen information, guidance and support for Réunion businesses, using accountants as proximity relays across the territory.
For Regional President Huguette Bello, this collective mobilisation carries real weight: "We are entering a new phase — concrete implementation, with all the territory's economic actors."
Four structural challenges to 2030
Act II targets four major transitions: decarbonising the local economy, scaling up digitalisation in SMEs, industrial modernisation and environmental compliance. Together, these four axes form an ambitious roadmap for an island that still faces 19% unemployment as of Q2 2026.
Why it matters
Réunion cannot afford to wait. With public-sector job losses mounting and insolvencies rising, mobilising the entrepreneurial ecosystem around a shared vision is essential to creating sustainable employment. Act II bets on private enterprise to take the lead.
