On 25 June 2026, Mauritius took a decisive step in its economic transformation. The National Fintech Strategy 2026-2030 was officially launched at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Auditorium at Côte-d'Or Technopole, before over 200 delegates from the financial and technology sectors. The ambition: make the island «Africa's trusted platform for digital finance», in the words of Minister Jyoti Jeetun.
Six pillars to reshape the economy
The strategy rests on six structural pillars:
- Improving the regulatory framework for a more agile environment
- Digital infrastructure and cybersecurity
- Local talent development
- Support for innovation and investment
- Strengthened international cooperation
- Financial inclusion and consumer protection
The document was developed with the support of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) — an international seal of legitimacy that lends the strategy credibility beyond the island.
Within Mauritius's digital ecosystem
The strategy sits within a broader vision, complementing the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and FAIR AI guidelines championed by Minister Avinash Ramtohul. The SuperApp KOREK! is cited among the flagship elements of the digital ecosystem being built. Concrete goals include streamlining administrative procedures, strengthening payment systems and creating a safer digital environment for businesses and households.
Why it matters
Mauritius has already built a solid reputation as Africa's financial hub — ranked first in Africa by Bloomberg Economics 2026 for investment attractiveness. The Fintech Strategy 2026-2030 adds a digital layer to that comparative advantage. On a continent where over 60% of the population remains unbanked, the potential market is enormous. For Indian Ocean players, Mauritius now offers a regulatory framework designed for the age of decentralised finance.
