Mauritius has been ranked 1st in Africa and 61st globally on the 2026 Global Investment Risk and Resilience Index — a recognition that enshrines the island's economic solidity and reinforces its appeal to international investors.

523 projects, nearly Rs 650 billion announced

According to data published by the Economic Development Board (EDB) on 21 August 2026, Mauritius has identified 523 investment projects across 16 sectors, for a total announced value of Rs 649.7 billion. Of this portfolio, Rs 138.8 billion has already been realised — a 21% materialisation rate, consistent with the long-term horizon of major infrastructure projects.

Energy leads the sectoral rankings: Rs 23 billion invested in 44 renewable energy initiatives illustrates Mauritius's commitment to the low-carbon transition. Health and education follow closely, signalling an economy that prioritises human capital alongside fiscal attractiveness.

A score that outpaces Tanzania, Botswana and Seychelles

With an overall score of 62.20 points — including 50.87 on resilience criteria covering political stability, inflation control and legal security — Mauritius outperforms its African neighbours, notably Tanzania, Botswana, Seychelles and Cabo Verde. The ranking is built on a multi-criteria assessment incorporating currency risk, governance quality and the regulatory environment.

New measures to sustain the momentum

Building on this achievement, the government has announced several key initiatives. The Business Obstacles Alert Mechanism (BOAM) has been launched to swiftly resolve administrative bottlenecks reported by businesses. From 1 January 2027, companies will be required to appoint data protection officers under modernised regulations. A smart farm pilot combining artificial intelligence and vertical agriculture is set to launch in October 2026 as part of a primary sector diversification drive.

Why it matters

This ranking confirms that Mauritius is no longer competing on tax incentives alone: it is now its structural resilience that wins investor confidence. For entrepreneurs across the Indian Ocean region, Mauritius remains the preferred gateway to African and Asian markets — and this title of Africa's resilience champion only strengthens a strategic position that regional competitors have yet to match.
