The Réunion Region has adopted its 2026 budget: a total of €1.06 billion, with an investment envelope of €541 million, up more than 22.7% from the previous year. It is one of the most ambitious public investment budgets the island has seen, in a context that President Huguette Bello describes as «unprecedented since the start of decentralisation».
A budget geared towards transition and infrastructure
The sectoral breakdown reveals the priorities of the mandate. Ecological transition and cross-cutting missions share the largest allocations at €341.8M and €341.5M respectively. Human and social development receives €280.9M, while economic development is allocated €99.8M.
Confirmed flagship projects include the resumption of the Nouvelle Route du Littoral (NRL) construction site — whose accumulated delays had been weighing on confidence in the construction sector — acceleration of the high school building programme, modernisation of educational infrastructure and development of mobility networks.
A vote under political tension
The budget was adopted, though not without resistance. The opposition, led by Jean-Jacques Morel, criticised it for failing to address the needs of Réunion's businesses, already weakened by a difficult national context — record corporate insolvencies, social pressure and national budget uncertainties. Vice-President Patrick Lebreton stressed that borrowing remains under control despite the stated ambition.
Why it matters
A €541M public investment on an island of 900,000 people represents a massive economic injection. For local SMEs, construction companies, equipment suppliers and public service providers, this budget opens substantial public contracts to capture in 2026. The resumption of the NRL, in particular, will mobilise hundreds of companies and thousands of direct and indirect jobs for several years to come.
For regional investors (Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros), a Réunion engaged in massive construction remains a partnership opportunity in materials, specialised equipment and engineering — niches where Indian Ocean actors have successfully positioned themselves in the past.
