A first in East African capital markets history. Kenya's Capital Markets Authority (CMA) has greenlit the WSA Banking ETF, managed by Tradiam Asset Managers — an exchange-traded fund entirely domiciled in Kenya, designed to track the explosive performance of the local banking sector on the Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE).
A Banking Sector on Fire
The timing is no coincidence. The NSE Banking Index has surged +62% since October 2025, pushing Kenya's total stock market capitalisation beyond 4 trillion Kenyan shillings. The WSA Banking ETF targets a raise of between 5 and 7 billion shillings ($38.6–54.1 million) at its Q4 2026 launch.
The Heavyweight Basket
The ETF bundles Kenya's biggest listed banks: Equity Group ($2.5bn market cap), KCB Group ($2bn), I&M Group, Stanbic Holdings and Co-operative Bank. Some of these names have individually gained as much as 60.6% year-to-date, driven by rate tailwinds, fast-growing customer bases and regional expansion.
A Structural Innovation for Nairobi
Unlike the two ETFs previously listed on the NSE, which were South African products, the WSA Banking ETF is the first index fund 100% domiciled in Kenya. This distinction is strategic: it anchors asset management locally, reduces currency and dividend repatriation costs, and strengthens Nairobi's credentials as a regional financial hub.
Why It Matters
For regional investors — including those across the Indian Ocean — this product offers simple, liquid exposure to Kenya's banking boom without selecting individual stocks. As Nairobi consolidates its role as East Africa's financial gateway, the WSA Banking ETF approval sends a clear signal: African capital markets are deepening in both breadth and sophistication.
