[AFRICA] Solar Record 2026: 17 Gigawatts Installed Across the Continent, Up 45%

Africa is on track for 17 GW of new solar capacity in 2026 (+45%), a third consecutive annual record. But 600 million people remain without electricity access.

Africa is on track for a third consecutive year of solar installation records. According to projections by Ember and the African Tech Futures Lab published in August 2026, the continent is set to add 17 gigawatts of new photovoltaic capacity this year — a 45% rise over 2025.

An Unprecedented Acceleration Across Multiple Markets

South Africa remains the continent's largest cumulative market through its REIPPPP program, but new players are emerging. Nigeria signed a $200 million agreement to connect rural areas through solar mini-grids, while West African nations — Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal — are accelerating tender pipelines.

Rural electrification rates remain critically low in some areas — between 2% and 10% in parts of Benin, Burkina Faso, and Niger — driving investor interest in decentralized mini-grids rather than national grid extensions.

600 Million People Still Without Power

Despite record installation figures, approximately 600 million people in Africa still lack electricity access. Distributed solar — household panels, village mini-grids — is now seen as the fastest path to reach dispersed populations in sub-Saharan Africa and Indian Ocean coastal zones.

International Investors Increasingly Present

African Energy Week 2026 in Cape Town confirmed the sector's transformation: institutional funds and international developers are positioning sub-Saharan Africa as a strategic priority for energy transition. Large-scale projects — 100 to 500 MW solar parks — are proliferating from Kenya to Zambia.

Why It Matters

For Indian Ocean economic policymakers, Africa's solar momentum is directly relevant. Madagascar, Comoros, and Réunion can all benefit from this flow of green capital. Energy is the key to industrial competitiveness: every megawatt installed means one more business that can operate, one more job created.
