[EAST AFRICA] East Africa confirms its status as the continent's growth engine in 2026

The AfDB, IMF and analysts agree: East Africa is the continent's growth engine in 2026. Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia post rates between 5% and 7% — well above the African average.

East Africa is establishing itself in 2026 as Africa's most dynamic sub-region. According to several converging reports — African Development Bank (AfDB), IMF and regional academic institutions — Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda and Ethiopia collectively post growth rates above the continental average, driven by deep structural reforms and massive infrastructure investments.

Remarkable growth figures

Rwanda and Tanzania stand out particularly in 2026, with growth outlooks the AfDB describes as «solid». East Africa is expected to post growth rates of 5% to 7% for the sub-region's major economies, versus an African average below 4%. Kenya, though its forecasts were slightly trimmed by Fitch, maintains its position as regional leader by GDP size.

Growth is driven by several converging engines: the boom in the tech and fintech sector (illustrated by the Rwanda FinTech Centre), conference tourism development, agricultural exports and renewable energy investments. The region also benefits from the East African Community (EAC) maturing as an integrated trading bloc.

Challenges not to underestimate

This momentum is not without vulnerabilities. Fitch identified fragility risks in Tanzania, and the DRC remains a source of regional instability. Public debt in several states is under scrutiny, particularly in Kenya where fiscal pressures led to budget revisions. Inflation, though contained, remains a monitored variable in several East African capitals.

Why it matters: East Africa is the Indian Ocean's main emerging trading partner. The dynamism of Nairobi, Kigali and Dar-es-Salaam creates direct opportunities for Mauritian, Malagasy and Seychellois business operators. Indian Ocean companies focused only on their local markets are missing a market of several hundred million fast-growing consumers.
