Africa's largest refinery has cleared a new milestone. In a maximum-capacity test, the Dangote facility in Lagos reached 700,000 barrels per day (bpd), exceeding its nominal design capacity of 650,000 bpd. It also holds the title of the world's largest single-train refinery. Devakumar Edwin, VP of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries, confirmed the ambition of doubling output to 1.4 million bpd within thirty months.
From importer to exporter: a structural shift
Nigeria, Africa's top oil producer, until recently imported almost all of its refined petroleum products. The Dangote refinery, operational since 2024, has reversed this logic. In April 2026, the facility became the world's largest exporter of aviation fuel. Its clients include the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, the United States and Saudi Arabia.
Continental impact and Indian Ocean implications
Dangote's rising output is helping stabilise energy supply across sub-Saharan Africa. For Indian Ocean territories — Mauritius, Réunion, Madagascar, Seychelles — which are heavily dependent on fuel imports, this development could eventually mean shorter supply chains and more competitive prices. The refinery also aims to cushion African fuel markets from the effects of global geopolitical tensions.
Ambition: 1.4 million barrels by 2028
The capacity ramp-up plan targets a doubling of production within thirty months. At 1.4 million bpd, the Dangote refinery would rank among the world's five largest refining sites — establishing itself as a transcontinental hub.
