**Tanzania is allocating $949 million to infrastructure in its 2026-2027 budget**, with clear priorities around Dar es Salaam's Bus Rapid Transit system, regional road corridors toward Kenya, and airport facilities. It is a strong signal from an economy betting on connectivity to accelerate its growth trajectory.

## A Record Budget for Public Works

Tanzania's Ministry of Works has presented a development envelope of **TZS 2,467.3 billion**, equivalent to approximately **$949 million** for the 2026-2027 fiscal year — a 10.3% increase on the previous year. Financing draws 37% from external sources (bilateral and multilateral lenders), with the remainder coming from the national budget and the Tanzanian Road Fund.

## BRT Dar es Salaam and Priority Corridors

The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project for Dar es Salaam — East Africa's largest city — receives the biggest sectoral allocation at **TZS 213.8 billion**. The Arusha-Moshi-Himo-Holili road corridor, a strategic artery toward the Kenyan border, receives **TZS 83.9 billion**. The Dodoma outer ring road gets TZS 50 billion, and the Geita-Bulyanhulu-Kahama route, serving the country's main mining zone, TZS 46.7 billion.

## Airports and Lake Ferries Upgraded

Airport infrastructure receives a combined envelope of **TZS 119.9 billion**, including TZS 34.1 billion specifically for Dodoma's Msalato Airport. Lake ferries and terminals — vital for connectivity on Lakes Tanganyika and Victoria — receive TZS 28.4 billion.

## PPP and Infrastructure Bonds: A New Tool

This budget introduces **infrastructure bonds** for strategic road corridors, paving the way for broader private sector financing. The Dar es Salaam-Chalinze-Morogoro highway is one target. In 2025, Tanzania's construction sector already created **18,988 direct jobs**, illustrating the social impact of such investments.

## Why It Matters

Tanzania is a critical logistics hub for East Africa, with ports serving the Zambian and Congolese hinterland. Stronger road and airport networks reduce regional transport costs and improve export competitiveness. For the Indian Ocean region, the signal is direct: a better-connected Tanzania means more trade flows with Mauritius, the Comoros, Mayotte and Madagascar.
