Fitch Ratings reaffirmed Tanzania's sovereign rating at 'B+' with a stable outlook, confirming a robust growth trajectory estimated at 6.3% for 2026, up from 5.9% in 2025\. Tanzania sits well above Fitch's B-rated peers' median of 4.5%, underpinned by a combination of mining, energy and infrastructure projects unprecedented in the sub-region.

## Mining, LNG and the Standard Gauge Railway as growth engines

Tanzanian growth rests on four complementary sectors: mining, led by the Nyanzaga gold mine in Mwanza expected to attract over USD 500 million in investment; offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects; agricultural expansion; and major infrastructure projects, notably the Standard Gauge Railway. Tanzania has also signed a niobium development agreement valued at approximately USD 442 million.

## Identified risks: geopolitical tensions and input prices

The Tanzanian government itself flagged external geopolitical risks to Fitch, including the potential impact of tensions around Iran on fuel and fertiliser prices — two key factors for a largely agricultural economy. Despite these uncertainties, Dar es Salaam notes that growth has "not yet returned to pre-COVID-19 levels," leaving significant room for further expansion.

## A pillar of East African dynamism

With a GDP of approximately USD 85 billion in 2025 and a population of 65 million, Tanzania is one of the pillars of East African growth. East Africa as a whole is projected to grow at around 6% in 2026, driven by Ethiopia and Kenya but increasingly supported by Dar es Salaam, which plays a growing role in regional transport corridors toward the continental interior.

## Why it matters

The B+ affirmation sends a strong signal to institutional investors seeking African diversification. It validates Tanzania's macroeconomic stability and strengthens the country's attractiveness for large-scale mining and energy project financing. For the wider Indian Ocean region, Tanzania represents a fast-growing strategic trading partner whose expansion indirectly benefits maritime, logistics and financial operators across the region.
