**Rwanda's economy grew by 10% in the first quarter of 2026**, bringing GDP to 6,346 billion Rwandan francs, according to the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) and confirmed by Finance Minister Yusuf Murangwa. This performance firmly establishes Rwanda among East Africa's most dynamic economies.

## Industry and services as twin engines

Industry grew by 13% and is the leading driver in growth rate terms, with mining and quarrying up 20%, manufacturing at +15% and construction at +11%. Services, which account for 52% of GDP, grew 7%, with standout performances in information and communications technology (+22%) and administrative and support services (+20%). Finance, transport and trade each advanced 11%.

Agriculture (19% of GDP) contributed with 8% overall growth, driven by export crops which surged 39%. This export strength contrasts with food crops, up a modest 3% — a trend Minister Murangwa described as "concerning" from a food security standpoint.

## Shadow sectors to watch

Two sectors posted notable contractions: hotels and restaurants (-16%) and health services (-18%), reflecting post-pandemic adjustments and pressure on public finances. The current account deficit and fiscal consolidation remain medium-term structural risks.

## Why it matters

With 10% growth in a single quarter, Rwanda demonstrates that accelerated economic diversification — driven by extractive industries, digital and services — can deliver spectacular results. A model that several Indian Ocean economies are watching closely.
