- Description: Rwanda's GDP surged 10% in Q1 2026, driven by services, industry and agriculture. Following 9.4% growth in 2025, Kigali cements its status as Africa's growth engine, boosted by a new international airport and RwandAir's regional expansion.

**Rwanda's National Institute of Statistics (NISR) has confirmed it: GDP grew by 10% in the first quarter of 2026, following 9.4% growth across the whole of 2025\. The country is now firmly established among Africa's most dynamic economies.**

## Services, industry and agriculture: three pillars firing together

Rwanda's growth rests on three simultaneous drivers. Services (52% of GDP) lead the charge, powered by retail, transport and telecoms. Industry (24% of GDP), boosted by mining, construction and manufacturing, continues its rise. Agriculture (19% of GDP) provides a stable base, supported by strong food crop output. The NISR notes «simultaneous strength across all three major sectors — rarely observed at this scale».

## Flagship projects driving investment

Behind the numbers, structural projects are acting as catalysts. The construction of Kigali's new international airport — one of the continent's most ambitious — is generating significant value chains in civil engineering, logistics and services. RwandAir's expansion, positioning itself as an East African regional hub, is also boosting tourism and freight. Public debt remains controlled at 74.8% of GDP, below initial projections.

## IMF cautious on full-year outlook

While Q1 is spectacular, the International Monetary Fund projects a moderation to 6.8% for full-year 2026 — a return to more sustainable growth after several quarters of outperformance. Even so, 6.8% would still place Rwanda in the top tier of high-growth African economies.

## Why it matters

Rwanda represents an economic governance model closely watched across the Indian Ocean region. For policymakers in Mauritius, Réunion or Madagascar, Kigali's trajectory — institutional reform, FDI attraction, sectoral diversification — offers concrete lessons. The question is no longer whether Rwanda can maintain its momentum, but how quickly other regional economies will take note.
