After five years of forced suspension due to an Islamist insurgency in the country's north, TotalEnergies officially relaunched its Mozambique liquefied natural gas (LNG) mega-project in January 2026\. A $20 billion investment that is redrawing the energy map of Eastern Africa and opening new horizons for the Indian Ocean region.

## A Colossal Project Back on Track

The Mozambique LNG project had been suspended in 2021 following jihadist attacks in Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique. On 29 January 2026, TotalEnergies announced the full restart of all its activities, onshore and offshore. With a nameplate capacity of 12.9 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), the complex becomes one of the largest LNG projects in sub-Saharan Africa.

Four thousand workers have been mobilised for the restart phase. TotalEnergies has awarded $4 billion in contracts to Mozambican companies, marking a strong commitment to local content. Commercial production is targeted for 2029.

## A Booming Gas Ecosystem

TotalEnergies' Mozambique LNG does not stand alone. Other projects are progressing simultaneously: Coral North (Eni), with 3.6 mtpa from 2028 and $6–7 billion in investment, and Rovuma LNG (ExxonMobil), at $24 billion, in advanced engineering. The combined capacity of all these projects will exceed 25 mtpa in the early 2030s, making Mozambique one of Africa's leading LNG exporters.

## Debates at African Energy Week 2026

These developments are fuelling discussions at African Energy Week 2026, scheduled 12–16 October in Cape Town. An entire session is dedicated to Mozambique investments, addressing two key themes: LNG restart for export, and gas-to-power conversion to supply an African region still severely underserved by energy. Hydropower (Cahora Bassa, 2,075 MW) currently covers 70% of the country's electricity production.

## Why It Matters

The return of the Mozambique LNG project is a major signal for the entire Indian Ocean space. The Mozambique Channel is resuming its role as a strategic energy corridor. For the region's island economies — which import the bulk of their energy — medium-term gas supply prospects are transforming. And for investors, Mozambique is confirming its trajectory towards becoming a leading African energy power.
