**Longoni Port, Mayotte's sole deep-water commercial harbour, resumed operations on September 7, 2026, after several days of disruption.** A tripartite agreement between the Departmental Council, the newly established public port authority EPPCM, and handling company Manu-Port ended a crisis that threatened to cut off the island's supply chain.

## The End of a Historic Private Concession

Longoni had long been operated by Mayotte Channel Gateway (MCG) under a private concession. When a court ruling terminated that agreement, the port was left without an authorised operator. The Departmental Council responded by creating the EPPCM (Établissement public du port de commerce de Mayotte), whose board held its third meeting on August 19, 2026\. A **€4 million reimbursable budget** was allocated to cover operations through year-end 2026, with Zamimou Ahamadi, the Department's Vice-President for Finance, taking the helm of the new authority.

## 700 Containers Stranded, Three Ships Waiting

The immediate pressure was acute: an MSC vessel that docked on August 29 was waiting to load roughly **700 empty containers**, while two other ships sat at anchor with no authorised handler on site. The September 7 agreement cleared the way for Manu-Port to resume operations, unblocking a situation that was fast becoming a supply emergency for Mayotte's traders and households. The Departmental Council confirmed in a statement that "conditions are now in place for businesses and economic actors to resume normal activities."

## A Public Authority Still Finding Its Feet

With the immediate crisis defused, longer-term questions remain open. Talks are set to begin on Tuesday to establish a durable contractual framework with Manu-Port — covering tariffs, facility access rights, and the contentious issue of heavy equipment still held by MCG. A formal tender for a new private operator is expected further down the line.

## Why It Matters

Longoni is not just any port: it is the economic lifeline of an island that imports virtually all of its consumer goods. Any prolonged shutdown translates directly into shortages and higher prices for Mayotte's **380,000 residents**. The shift to public management also signals a broader change in how Mayotte governs its strategic infrastructure, as the island seeks deeper economic integration within the Indian Ocean region. How quickly the EPPCM can stabilise operations and lock in a sustainable private-sector partnership will shape the island's economic outlook for months to come.
