Eighteen months after Cyclone Chido struck, inflationary pressures are back on the radar for Mayotte's households. Data published on September 28, 2026, by *Le Journal de Mayotte* shows consumer prices rose **0.4% in August** month-on-month, reversing a slight July dip, pushing the annual rate to **+2% year-on-year** (August 2025 to August 2026).

## Energy and Transport Lead the Surge

Energy is where pressure is most intense: the category posted a **+11.8% annual gain**, with electricity alone jumping 3.9% in August. Transport followed at **+3.9% in August**, driven by soaring airfares (**+8.2%**), a sign that air connectivity to the archipelago remains strained.

Food — which represents **26% of the household consumption basket** — posted a +1.6% annual gain, with fresh produce up a sharp +4.1% year-on-year despite a slight monthly dip in August. One bright spot: bottled gas prices fell by €2.50.

## Below the National Average, But Context Matters

Mayotte's 2% inflation rate sits below France's national average of 2.4%, but that comparison masks a specific reality: in a territory where incomes are structurally lower and non-discretionary spending is a larger share of the budget, every percentage point of inflation weighs more heavily.

The post-Chido context amplifies these pressures: storage and distribution infrastructure damaged by the cyclone weakened supply chains, driving up logistics and transport costs — precisely the two categories showing the sharpest increases.

## Why It Matters

For businesses operating in Mayotte, this renewed inflationary uptick means fresh pressure on operating costs, particularly for energy and logistics. In a territory still in the post-cyclone reconstruction phase, any price acceleration risks undermining the recovery of local consumption. Policymakers and business leaders will need to watch September data closely to determine whether this marks a durable trend.
