The Mauritian government published on 26 July 2026 the first draft of its Vision 2050 — an ambitious strategic plan targeting a GDP of $50 billion by mid-century. The challenge: achieving it will require between 390,000 and 500,000 additional workers. Public consultation closed on 7 August.

## '50 by 50': doubling GDP in a generation

The government's chosen formula is deliberately memorable: «50 by 50» — $50 billion by 2050\. With Mauritius's 2026 GDP projected at $29 billion, that means growing by 72% over the next 24 years. Minister Jyoti Jeetun, responsible for Financial Services and Economic Planning, led a public consultation to refine the priorities of the document available at vision2050.govmu.org.

The plan's main pillars cover infrastructure, labor market reform, deeper economic integration with continental Africa, a stronger financial regulatory framework, and capitalizing on the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

## The 500,000-worker challenge

The most politically sensitive element is demographic. Vision 2050 projects a shortfall of 390,000 to 500,000 workers by 2050 — staggering for an island of 1.3 million people, which will inevitably require opening the labor market wider to foreign workers.

The topic is politically charged: Mauritian labor unions are closely monitoring the consultations, aware that economic immigration will dominate public debate for years to come. The question goes beyond labor markets: it engages the identity and social cohesion of an island that has always carefully managed its demographic balance.

## Why it matters

Vision 2050 is the roadmap by which Mauritius intends to cement its status as Africa's leading financial and economic hub. Decisions made today — on immigration, infrastructure, regulation — will define the island's competitiveness for the next three decades. For regional investors, the message is clear: Mauritius is planning ahead, consulting, projecting. That is no small thing in a region still marked by improvisation.
