Mauritius officially launched its **National Fintech Strategy 2026-2030** on June 25, 2026, at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Auditorium at Côte d'Or Technopole. Before more than 200 representatives from the financial and technology sectors, the Mauritian government set out an unambiguous ambition: to make Mauritius Africa's trusted platform for digital finance.

## Six Pillars to Transform the Ecosystem

The strategy is built around six complementary pillars: an innovation-friendly regulatory framework, digital infrastructure development and cybersecurity, local talent development, investment attraction and market development, international collaboration and regional positioning, and financial inclusion with consumer protection.

Minister of Financial Services Dr. Jyoti Jeetun summed up the vision: «Position Mauritius as Africa's trusted platform for digital finance, driven by innovation.» The strategy sits within a broader digital ecosystem that includes the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and the FAIR AI Guidelines already adopted by the government.

## UN Backing Adds International Credibility

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) supported the strategy's development. Eunice Kamwendo, from UNECA's Southern Africa sub-regional office, described it as «forward-looking, ambitious and evidence-based.» This UN partnership lends the initiative the credibility needed to attract foreign investors and international fintech players.

## A Digital Ecosystem Already in Motion

Mauritius is not starting from scratch. The island already has the KOREK! SuperApp — a government digital services platform — and a financial services sector that represents a significant share of GDP. Minister of IT and Innovation Dr. Avinash Ramtohul emphasized that the fintech strategy complements existing government digital tools and should accelerate their adoption by the private sector.

## Why It Matters

For the Indian Ocean region, the stakes go beyond Mauritius. If the island succeeds in establishing itself as an African fintech hub, it would create a ripple effect for startups and investors across the region — from Réunion to Madagascar and the Seychelles. The strategy arrives as several major African economies — Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa — are competing for the same positioning. Mauritius is betting on regulatory stability and its track record as an international financial centre as its competitive edge.
