**After several months of transition, SBM Bank (Mauritius) Ltd officially appointed Gervais Gua as Chief Executive Officer on August 12, 2026\. With nearly three decades of experience in banking and capital markets, the new head of Mauritius's second-largest bank aims to stabilise the institution before guiding it through a deeper transformation.**

## An Expected Appointment, a Mapped-Out Strategy

Gervais Gua is no stranger to SBM Bank's leadership. He joined the institution in December 2025 as Chief Operating Officer, then took on the Officer-in-Charge role from March 2026, pending regulatory approvals from the Bank of Mauritius and the Financial Services Commission. His official appointment as CEO was announced on August 12 by Board Chairman Rundheersing Bheenick.

## Three Decades Between Deutsche Bank and Singapore

Before SBM, Gervais Gua built an international career of nearly thirty years in investment banking, wealth management, and capital markets. He held leadership positions at Deutsche Bank in Mauritius and within Reliance/Nippon Life's financial operations in Singapore — a profile oriented toward regional markets and financial sophistication.

## A Three-Phase Strategy

Board Chairman Bheenick noted that Gua's management had already strengthened governance, controls, risk management and asset quality. His roadmap is built around three pillars: Stabilise (consolidate fundamentals), Build (develop capabilities) and Transform (drive organisational change) — a sequence that reflects an institution focused on rebuilding its credibility.

## Why It Matters

SBM Bank is one of the systemic pillars of Mauritius's financial sector. The confirmation of a permanent CEO after months of interim leadership sends a stability signal to markets, regulators, and corporate clients. In an environment where the Bank of Mauritius holds its key rate at 4.75% and national growth is projected at 2.8% for 2026, banking governance quality is a direct factor in the attractiveness of the Mauritius financial centre.
