Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB) announced on 12 July 2026 a major expansion of its sustainable finance programme: the dedicated envelope jumps from **10 to 25 billion Mauritian rupees** — approximately **€470 million** — to meet surging demand from businesses and individuals seeking positive-impact investments.

## Three Years In, an Acceleration Decided

Launched in 2023, MCB's sustainable finance programme quickly exhausted its initial 10-billion-rupee envelope. The 10 billion already disbursed delivered:

- Avoidance of **34,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions**
- Installation of **21.1 MW of renewable energy capacity** on the island
- Financing of projects spanning solar energy, sustainable mobility, circular economy, water management and energy efficiency

With demand accelerating, MCB has decided to multiply the envelope by 2.5, marking an unprecedented scaling of green finance in Mauritius.

## Tailored Products for Every Segment

The programme relies on several distinct instruments. The **Green Loan** targets individuals financing renewable energy projects on their property. The **Lokal is Beautiful Scheme** supports Mauritian SMEs in their green transition. Sector-specific offerings round out the framework, covering cultural heritage preservation and nature-based solutions.

« We observe growing demand from companies seeking to invest in projects combining economic performance and positive impact, » notes **Aldo Sydonie**, Head of Mauritian and Regional Corporates at MCB.

## Mauritius Consolidating Its Role as a Regional Financial Hub

This initiative fits into Mauritius' broader strategy to cement its positioning as a sustainability-oriented regional financial centre. With public debt at **86% of GDP** and IMF pressure to accelerate fiscal reforms, Mauritius' private sector is stepping up as the driver of green investment.

## Why It Matters

Green finance remains nascent across the Indian Ocean region. By scaling its programme to 25 billion rupees, MCB is positioning itself as the region's primary sustainable finance conduit. It also sends a clear signal to international institutional investors: Mauritius can absorb large-scale green capital flows, backed by the regulatory guarantees and banking stability that other regional financial centres still lack.
