From 1 September 2026, Emirates passengers flying between Mauritius and Dubai can travel in Premium Economy — a first for the route that places the island among the best-connected Indian Ocean destinations. The airline now offers up to 80 seats per flight in this intermediate cabin, spread across two of its three daily rotations.

## Two aircraft, two configurations

Emirates operates the Mauritius route (MRU) via two Premium-Economy-equipped aircraft types. The Airbus A380 on flights EK703/EK704 offers 56 Premium Economy seats. The retrofitted Boeing 777 serving EK709/EK710 carries 24\. In total, Mauritius gains 80 daily Premium Economy seats — a figure comparable with leading global tourist destinations such as the Maldives or Bali.

## Targeting honeymoons and premium families

The new cabin answers growing demand from European, Asian and American travellers seeking more comfort without paying Business fares. Honeymooning couples — a historically strong segment for Mauritius — and upper-middle-income families are the primary targets. Premium Economy also provides access to over 70 onward connections from Dubai, broadening Mauritius's appeal as a premium transit hub.

## A strong signal for high-value tourism

For the island, Emirates' move fits into Mauritius's broader tourism upgrading strategy. First-half 2026 tourism revenues had already reached record levels according to Statistics Mauritius data. The open-skies debate, actively playing out in September 2026 according to *L'Express Maurice*, could amplify these effects by attracting more carriers to underserved slots.

## Why it matters

The arrival of Premium Economy in Mauritius is not merely a comfort issue. It mechanically raises the average revenue per passenger generated by the destination, improves yields for the luxury hotels that host these traveller profiles, and strengthens Mauritius's competitive position against the Maldives and Seychelles. It is also a confidence signal from a strategic partner — Emirates carries several hundred thousand passengers to and from the island every year.
