**On September 2, 2026, Concentrix CVG (Mauritius) Ltd called a staff meeting to confirm the permanent closure of its Ebène operations.** Around 320 employees now face an uncertain future — a sharp signal for Mauritius's BPO industry in the age of artificial intelligence.

## From 870 to Fewer Than 320: A Three-Year Slide

The closure is the final act of a gradual unravelling. In 2023, Concentrix still employed around **870 people** in Mauritius. Over the following three years, **7 major clients left the portfolio** without a single durable replacement. The last client acquired lasted just 18 months. Headcount fell by more than 60%, landing below 320 today.

## AI and French Regulations: A Double Blow

Management explicitly cited "rapid technological transformation — AI, chatbots, automation" as a key driver of the shutdown. These technological shifts compounded the impact of French cold-calling regulations that directly curbed the volume of francophone telemarketing operations run from the island. Mauritius, long prized as a bilingual BPO hub with competitive costs, finds itself squeezed between rising production costs and algorithmic competition that is systematically replacing lower-skilled processing work.

## A "Transparent, Legal and Responsible" Wind-Down

The company pledged to handle the closure in a "transparent, legal and responsible" manner, in line with Mauritian labour law. Staff had until **September 11** to designate representatives for formal closure negotiations. The local legal framework provides for severance pay and a mandatory consultation period.

## Why It Matters

Concentrix's exit raises a strategic question for Mauritius. BPO/ITO is one of the island's key economic diversification pillars and a major employer of francophone graduates. While AI threatens low-value processing jobs, it simultaneously opens roles in algorithm oversight, AI-supervised services, and high-expertise digital functions. Mauritius's **National Fintech Strategy 2026–2030** could offer a landing zone for these 320 skilled professionals — but only if retraining programmes are accelerated and the regulatory environment is updated for the new digital economy.
