US call-centre giant Concentrix has permanently closed its Mauritius operation, leaving around 320 workers unemployed. The closure, announced on 8 September 2026, highlights the growing vulnerability of a sector that still accounts for 5.6% of the island's GDP.

## Seven clients lost in six years

Since 2020, Concentrix's Mauritius headcount shrank from 870 to fewer than 360 employees, according to figures reported by *Ion News*. The Port-Louis site signed only one new client over that period while losing seven. The culprits are well known: steadily rising labour costs in Mauritius, French regulatory restrictions on outbound telemarketing that have choked the francophone workstream, and intensifying competition from Madagascar, where operating costs remain significantly lower.

## AI as a crisis accelerator

Beyond the cost geography, automation is advancing fast. Generative AI models are progressively replacing call-centre agents on the most standardised tasks — complaint handling, first-level support, lead qualification. Industry observers warn that Concentrix's exit signals « an increased risk of restructuring » for the island's entire BPO industry.

## Madagascar and Réunion moving in

Mauritius is not losing market share into a vacuum: Madagascar is capturing a meaningful slice. Antananarivo has built a competitive BPO offering in just a few years, backed by labour costs two to three times lower than Mauritius. La Réunion, with its French overseas-department status, holds a regulatory edge for sensitive francophone markets.

## Why it matters

BPO employs tens of thousands in Mauritius and is a cornerstone of graduate-absorption policy. Concentrix's closure is not an isolated event — it signals that the island must urgently upgrade towards higher-value services: KPO, software engineering, offshore financial services. Without that shift, Mauritius faces structural erosion of its most accessible white-collar jobs.
