**Mauritius' 'Future Ready Economy' budget for 2026-2027 marks a decisive turning point: regulated stablecoins, Open Banking, real-asset tokenisation and a Golden Visa extended to fintech and AI talent. The island is staying the course as an international financial centre — backed by $10.3 billion in official reserves.**

## A budget betting on digital transformation

Presented under the theme 'Future Ready Economy', Mauritius' 2026-2027 budget places the island in the global race for digital financial hubs. Three measures are catching investor attention: the introduction of a legal framework for **stablecoin** issuance, the establishment of an **Open Banking** framework opening the financial system to fintechs, and the **tokenisation of real assets** (real estate, investment funds).

These reforms come against a stabilised macroeconomic backdrop: inflation has fallen to **3.7%**, down from a peak of 7% between 2022 and 2024\. GDP is growing at **3.2%** and official reserves exceed **$10.3 billion** — a safety cushion that gives reformers the room they need.

## The Golden Visa opens to tomorrow's talent

To attract the profiles building this future economy, the government is expanding its Golden Visa scheme. New target profiles include specialists in **fintech, global treasury, artificial intelligence, biotechnology and renewable energy**. A clear signal to the qualified diaspora and digital nomads still hesitant to settle in the Indian Ocean region.

MINDEX Limited and MINDEX Clearing Limited are officially recognised as **market infrastructure**, strengthening the credibility of the Mauritian stock exchange at an international level.

## The FATF 2027 deadline looms

Behind these technological advances, one regulatory deadline is shaping the agenda: the FATF (Financial Action Task Force) mutual evaluation scheduled for **2027**. Mauritius is accelerating its anti-money laundering reforms (AML/CFT) to present itself in a strong position — a necessity after the turbulence of the grey list period between 2020 and 2022.

The budget also introduces mandatory **sustainability reporting** under the Financial Reporting Act, enhancing transparency for companies listed on the Mauritius financial centre. Global Business (GBL) structures remain fiscally competitive despite adjustments driven by domestic tax reforms.

## Why this matters

Mauritius is not merely defending its rank as Africa's leading financial centre — it is anticipating tomorrow's standards. The simultaneous introduction of stablecoins, Open Banking and tokenisation puts the island ahead of most of its direct competitors in Africa and the Indian Ocean. For regional entrepreneurs and investors, this is a window of opportunity not to miss.
