Mauritius has unveiled its 2026-2027 budget under the theme **'Future Ready Economy'**, positioning the island as a regional hub for digital finance, artificial intelligence and high-value services.

## Strong Fundamentals as a Springboard

The budget rests on reassuring macroeconomic footing: inflation has fallen to **3.7%** from a peak above 7% in 2022-2024, foreign exchange reserves hit a record **$10.3 billion**, and GDP growth stands at **3.2%**. Per capita income rose 3.3%, keeping Mauritius on course toward its 2050 high-income target.

## AI, Cloud and Startups: The Digital Bet

Mauritius aims to become a **trusted regional centre for AI and cloud services**, partly through participation in Google's 'America-India Connect' initiative. A dedicated **Startup Act** will formalise the entrepreneurial ecosystem, while targeted tax regimes attract fintech, global treasury and biotech talent. The restructured Golden Visa scheme is now calibrated to draw these high-value profiles.

## Digital Finance: Stablecoins and Open Banking

The budget introduces a **regulatory framework for stablecoins and asset tokenisation** — a first for Mauritius — alongside a reinforced Open Banking regime. Both measures feed into preparations for the 2027 FATF mutual evaluation, which will determine the island's international financial reputation. Tax holidays for captive insurers are extended by five years.

## Port, Industry and Talent

Mauritius is targeting **regional port leadership** with a new international container handling operator, supported by an Industrial Act to boost exports. A structured migration policy is being developed to address persistent skilled-labour shortages.

## Why It Matters

This budget signals a strategic pivot: Mauritius is no longer banking solely on tourism and traditional financial services, but on **the convergence of finance, technology and data**. In an Indian Ocean where several nations compete for regional hub status, Mauritius's regulatory head start is a decisive competitive edge — provided execution follows ambition.
