The Stock Exchange of Mauritius posted an active week on August 6, 2026, with trading volumes reaching Rs 474.1 million on the Official Market. Despite a mild SEMTRI correction (−0.52% to 11,213.35 points), the SEMDEX held firm at 2,280.42 points and the SEM-10 at 433.10 — a sign of maturity for the Indian Ocean's leading financial exchange.

## CIEL Limited and MCB Group lead the pack

The week was dominated by two heavyweights. CIEL Limited concentrated Rs 283 million in trades, nearly 60% of total Official Market volumes. MCB Group Limited came second with Rs 109.7 million, confirming investors' appetite for large-cap banking stocks. CM Diversified Credit Ltd rounded out the top three at Rs 8.6 million.

Total Official Market capitalisation now stands at Rs 367.8 billion, with an additional Rs 31.3 billion on the Development & Enterprise Market (DEM). Annualised returns ranging from 11.44% to 19.40% on the Official Market speak to the exchange's structural performance.

## Selective gains, orderly consolidation

Of the 65 listed securities, 13 advanced, 36 held steady and 16 declined. Top performers included Fincorp Investment Ltd (+6.27%), ABCB Holdings Ltd (+5.59%) and Lottotech Ltd (+5.38%). On the downside, Mauritius Development Investment Trust (−6.67%) and Phoenix Beverages Ltd (−6.02%) saw profit-taking after several weeks of gains.

This configuration — mostly stable stocks with selective moves — characterises sector rotation rather than a sustained bearish trend. The DEM, more volatile, delivers annualised returns between 10.64% and 21.31%, drawing investors seeking alpha.

## A market shaped by Finance Act 2026

Enacted in August, Finance Act 2026 introduced a new 35% income tax bracket for high earners. Market impact remains limited: institutional investors continue favouring stable dividend-yielding equities, preferring the fiscal visibility of market returns. The Fintech Strategy 2026-2030, adopted earlier this year, further reinforces Mauritius as a destination for regional capital.

## Why it matters

Rs 474 million traded in a single week confirms that the Mauritius Stock Exchange has real and growing liquidity. The market is no longer the preserve of institutions: the spread of gainers and losers reflects a broadening investor base, including retail and regional funds. As Mauritius consolidates its position as Africa's financial hub, these figures validate the trajectory — and point to a lively autumn session.
