According to the Bloomberg Economics ranking published on October 5, 2026, Mauritius is the safest investment destination on the African continent, with a score of **0.6 out of 5**. The top position reflects the island's solid economic fundamentals, governance and regulatory environment — and arrives as Mauritius simultaneously confirms its lead as Africa's innovation hub.

## Mauritius Overtakes South Africa

The Bloomberg ranking assesses economic solidity, fiscal resilience, external vulnerability and governance across 54 African countries. Mauritius (**score 0.6**) overtakes South Africa (**0.5**), which held the top spot in 2025\. Egypt, Ghana, Botswana and Côte d'Ivoire follow at **0.3** each — Egypt having attracted $15 billion in FDI in 2025 per UNCTAD. Morocco ranks 7th (0.2), while Rwanda and Tanzania share 9th and 10th positions (0.0).

Bloomberg highlights the rare combination Mauritius offers: political stability, a strong legal framework, access to international financial markets and low external vulnerability. These structural advantages appear resilient despite the island's narrow domestic market and a widening current account deficit in Q2 2026.

## Nigeria's Comeback

Nigeria posts the strongest gain in the 2026 edition, climbing **four places** to **8th position** with a score of **0.1**. Its fiscal solidity (0.6) and economic solidity (0.4) show meaningful progress, while governance (-1.2) and infrastructure (-0.5) remain structural drags. A positive signal for investors following years of naira volatility and fiscal strain.

## A Double Signal: Investment and Innovation

The Bloomberg ranking coincides with a second major distinction: according to the Global Innovation Index 2026 published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Mauritius ranks **1st in Africa and 50th globally** for innovation. This dual recognition — investment destination and innovation hub — reinforces the island's strategic positioning as the premium business platform of the Indian Ocean and the African continent.

The result echoes Rand Merchant Bank's *Where to Invest in Africa* report (October 2025), which already placed Mauritius and Seychelles at the top, ahead of Egypt, South Africa and Morocco — confirming a structural trend.

## Why It Matters

In a global context of capital reallocation, investment-risk rankings have direct operational value: they guide multinational location decisions, investment fund allocations and agency rating strategies. For Mauritius, consolidating first place across two distinct reference rankings — Bloomberg Economics and the WIPO GII — strengthens its capacity to attract high-quality FDI and defend its role as a regional financial hub, at a time when competition from other African and Indian Ocean financial centres is intensifying.
