**Madagascar's tourism sector is experiencing unprecedented growth. At end-2025, national hotel capacity reached 34,365 rooms. In 2024, visitor arrivals surged 19% to 308,275, driven by a remarkable expansion of air routes opening Madagascar to high-spending new markets.**

## A Growing Hotel Offering

With 34,365 rooms available at end-2025, Madagascar's accommodation sector has significantly expanded its capacity. This reflects investments made in recent years across hotels and alternative lodging, particularly in high-potential zones such as Nosy Be, Antananarivo and the East Coast. The sector continues to attract new projects, particularly in the mid-range and premium segments where international demand is most dynamic.

## +19% Visitor Arrivals in 2024

The 308,275 visitors recorded in 2024 represent a 19% increase over the 259,850 arrivals of 2023\. The breakdown is telling: 254,137 air passengers and 54,138 cruise passengers. Cruise tourism is playing an increasingly important role in diversifying inbound flows and developing coastal destinations that remain largely untapped.

## An International Air Network Taking Shape

The surge in arrivals is directly tied to air network expansion. In 2024, several airlines strengthened or inaugurated routes to Madagascar. Emirates added a 5th weekly frequency on the Dubai–Antananarivo–Seychelles route, bringing its capacity on that rotation to over 1,800 weekly seats. Ethiopian Airlines increased from 7 to 10 weekly rotations to Antananarivo. Turkish Airlines opened a 3rd weekly frequency between Istanbul and the Malagasy capital. Israeli carrier Arkia launched the first direct Tel Aviv–Nosy Be flights on an A320\. Regional airline Ewa Air created new La Réunion–Tamatave–Sainte-Marie connections, strengthening Indian Ocean air integration.

## Why It Matters

Air connectivity is the primary lever of tourism growth for an island nation. The accumulation of new frequencies opens Madagascar to the Middle East, Turkey and Israel — high-spending markets that were previously out of reach. For Indian Ocean hotel investors, this confirms that Madagascar's moment has arrived: rising hotel capacity, structuring demand and a diversifying source-market mix. The challenge now is to align the quality of welcome and infrastructure with this market potential.
