From **August 14 to 16, 2026**, Toliara hosted the first green and blue economy fair of the Atsimo Andrefana region. Around twenty exhibitors showcased their products and expertise, under the aegis of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Agriculture, FAO, and GEF, in partnership with local NGOs including Tany Ifandovana and Saramba Initiative.

## Plant Fibers, Seafood Products, and Sustainable Crafts

The event brought together diverse actors: processors of **banana fiber** (bags, mats, poufs, decorative items), producers of **cassava flour**, artisans specializing in **sea urchin-derived products**, and local recycling entrepreneurs. NGO Art Lanto Design showcased creations made from sea rush fiber. Processed food products — honey, ecological charcoal, dried fish and shrimp — were also featured.

## Financing and Professionalization: The Scale-Up Challenge

Beyond its commercial showcase dimension, the fair enabled discussion of structural issues holding these industries back: access to available financing and the professionalization of local artisans and entrepreneurs. The lack of structured **commercial outlets** and the need for **vocational training** for young people were identified as the main obstacles to moving from subsistence crafts to a genuinely income-generating green and blue economy.

## Toliara: Strategic Hub of the Grand South

With 300 kilometers of coastline, the Atsimo Andrefana region has exceptional fishing and maritime potential. Fishing, aquaculture, and ocean-related tourism activities represent natural vectors of sustainable development. The fair is part of the broader Tefiala project, funded by GEF, which aims to strengthen the livelihoods of Malagasy coastal communities.

## Why It Matters

Madagascar is increasingly betting on the green and blue economy as a driver of inclusive growth. As national growth is projected at 6% in 2026, regions like Toliara risk being left behind without adequate structuring of local supply chains. Initiatives like this fair lay the foundations for a more resilient coastal economy — one that creates jobs while respecting the marine ecosystems on which thousands of Malagasy families depend for their survival.
