Of the 11,722 new cars registered in Réunion between January and July 2026, one in two is a hybrid. A historic milestone reflecting a deep shift in the island's automotive market — even as overall sales fall 5.37% year-on-year.

## Hybrids overtake combustion engines

With a 50.70% market share across the first seven months of 2026, hybrid vehicles now lead new registrations in Réunion. Traditional combustion-engine cars have fallen to just 33.17% of sales — a spectacular reversal accelerated since 2024 by tax incentives and commitments from local automotive retailers.

Pure electric vehicles are also gaining ground at 13.44% market share. Renault leads this segment with 527 registrations, well ahead of Skoda (101 units). In the premium segment, fully electric vehicles reach 32.36% of sales.

## A shrinking market despite the energy shift

The energy transition's good news doesn't conceal a more complex picture: the 11,722 registrations from January to July 2026 are down 5.37% from the same period in 2025\. Rising cost of living, still-elevated auto loan rates, and a wait-and-see attitude among households in an uncertain economic environment all contribute to the pullback.

For local dealerships, the challenge is converting latent demand for electrified vehicles into actual sales, within a constrained purchasing-power environment.

## Why it matters

Réunion is racing ahead in automotive energy transition — without waiting for the vagaries of French national policy. This 50.70% hybrid tipping point is a strong signal for carmakers, insurers, and energy service providers on the island. It also creates growing demand for charging infrastructure — still insufficient — and positions Réunion as a laboratory for sustainable mobility in French overseas territories.
