**Fewer visitors, but more spending.** That is the positive paradox revealed by Réunion's tourism results for the first half of 2026: while visitor numbers dipped **1.1%** to 269,153 tourists recorded, revenues rose **9.5%** to reach **€250.9 million**. A half-year record that reflects a successful shift upmarket for the destination.

## An Evolving Visitor Profile

Réunion's clientele remains largely metropolitan French — **83.6% of tourists** come from mainland France. But other European markets are growing by **4%**, with particularly strong rises from Germany (**+13%**) and Belgium (**+10%**). The strategy to open towards northern and central Europe, pursued over recent years, is beginning to bear fruit.

Leisure stays — tourists visiting to explore, relax or pursue outdoor sports — grew by **17%**, a sign that Réunion's image as an active, authentic destination is gaining ground against conventional beach destinations.

## A Sector That Carries Real Weight in the Local Economy

In 2025, Réunion's tourism sector represented **€484 million**, or **3.3% of the island's GDP**, and directly employed **13,550 professionals**. If the first half 2026 momentum holds over the full year, the sector could exceed the symbolic threshold of €500 million in annual revenues for the first time.

The Comité Réunionnais du Tourisme is betting on several levers to consolidate this trajectory: strengthening air links with Germany, developing hiking and ecotourism offerings, and upgrading accommodation standards.

## Why It Matters

This performance demonstrates that a strategy focused on quality over volume can compensate for a decline in visitor numbers. For Réunion's economic players, the message is clear: attracting fewer but higher-spending tourists is a more sustainable model — socially, environmentally and economically. A lesson that other Indian Ocean islands are beginning to take on board.
