The Comité Réunionnais du Tourisme (CRT) has released its H1 2026 results, and the conclusion is unambiguous: **tourist revenues have reached a record high**, surpassing all previous half-year benchmarks. The paradox: visitor arrivals are slightly down. What has changed is how much tourists spend once on the island.

## The premiumisation strategy is delivering

The 'less volume, more value' strategy put in place since 2024 is now producing tangible results. Average spend per visitor has increased markedly: classified accommodation, value-added activities, upscale dining. Réunion's tourism professionals, who took the risk of moving upmarket in a price-sensitive environment, are seeing their investments pay off.

This dynamic places Réunion on a trajectory similar to premium Mediterranean destinations — fewer visitors, but higher revenue per head for the whole supply chain.

## Opening the German market: a geographic bet

Alongside the results, the CRT announced a strategic decision: **officially opening the German market**. Germany is Europe's third-largest source market for long-haul tourism. German tourists are known for longer stays and spending per night historically above the European average.

Turning this market opportunity into real passenger flows requires adapted flight connections and targeted communication — two challenges on which the CRT is working with Air Austral and specialist tour operators.

## A new identity to match renewed ambitions

Symbolising this renewed ambition, the CRT also unveiled its **new visual identity**. Without abandoning the island's DNA — volcano, lagoon, cloud forests, cultural diversity — the repositioning clearly establishes Réunion as a sustainable premium destination in the Indian Ocean basin. The goal: compete with Mauritius and the Seychelles for high-spending travellers, while preserving what makes the island unique.

## Why it matters

For Réunion's economy, still weakened by record corporate insolvencies (IEDOM, Q2 2026) and social tensions around the regional budget, a strong tourism sector sends a positive signal to the broader business community. Tourism directly and indirectly employs over 20,000 people on the island. Record H1 revenues provide visibility for seasonal hiring and autumn investment decisions.

If the German market opening translates into real passenger flows by 2027, it would be a significant diversification lever — reducing the island's reliance on the French mainland market.
