**Réunion Island posted a record-breaking first half with 272,284 tourists — up 3% year-on-year — generating €229.1 million in revenue (+3.5%). The launch of a Frankfurt-Réunion route via Condor and Air Austral marks a strategic pivot toward market diversification.**

## Numbers That Confirm the Momentum

Réunion's H1 tourism results position the island as one of the Indian Ocean's top-performing destinations. The 272,284 visitors recorded generated €229.1 million in direct economic returns — an unprecedented level for the period. The figures were presented by Patrick Lebreton, president of the Réunion Tourism Committee, at the island's inaugural tourism industry summit.

Structural consolidation accelerated in August 2026, when the IRT (Île de La Réunion Tourisme) and FRT (Fédération Réunionnaise du Tourisme) merged into a single interprofessional committee bringing together hotels, airlines, leisure operators and accommodation providers under one roof.

## 82% French Visitors: A Structural Vulnerability

Despite the strong results, Patrick Lebreton flagged a structural risk: **82% of visitors** originate from mainland France, exposing the tourism economy to any shift in domestic demand. Geographical diversification is now the committee's top strategic priority.

This is the backdrop for the Frankfurt-Réunion route, operated by German carrier Condor in partnership with Air Austral via Mauritius. Lebreton described it as "a crucial step in our strategy to attack the German market." German-speaking travellers — who are heavy consumers of long-haul and eco-tourism — represent a natural fit for a destination built on nature and authenticity.

## Building Resilience into the Tourism Model

Beyond growth, industry players are developing a tourism resilience plan designed to anticipate cyclones, health crises and geopolitical disruptions rather than react to them after the fact. The plan is expected to be finalised before the next cyclone season.

The goal: safeguard €229 million in annual returns while building a premium offering capable of attracting high-spending visitors from non-francophone European and Gulf markets.

## Why It Matters

Tourism is a direct driver of employment on an island where unemployment stands at 18%. Diversifying source markets and building pre-emptive crisis protocols reinforces one of the island's rare engines of endogenous growth. The German route unlocks access to a pool of 84 million potential travellers.
