**Réunion's 2026 business season opened with both urgency and resolve. The employers' organisation «Les Entrepreneurs» gathered more than 250 business leaders to set the agenda for collective action, facing mounting challenges: regulatory obligations, administrative pressure and competitiveness to defend in a constrained island market.**

## Five priorities for an island under pressure

The assembly adopted five mobilisation priorities. First: reducing administrative burdens on Réunionese businesses, seen as disproportionate to the local economic fabric. Second: ensuring stability for business owners, who face regulatory uncertainty that delays investment decisions.

The three remaining priorities address structural issues: promoting local employment amid persistently high unemployment rates, developing a more competitive local economy, and — crucially — fully leveraging the island's geostrategic position at the heart of the Indian Ocean, an asset still insufficiently exploited.

## Crafts and trades: 60,000 jobs to protect

The artisan and trades sector took centre stage. Representing 60,000 jobs — one of the island's largest employers — it faces growing cash-flow difficulties. A 2026-2028 partnership agreement was signed with the Chamber of Trades and Crafts (CMA), covering three pillars: financial resilience, skills development (digital, AI, green transition) and stronger local anchoring in public procurement.

## E-invoicing and the CBAM: two regulatory deadlines causing concern

Business leaders also voiced concerns over two new regulatory requirements: mandatory e-invoicing, which will require digital investment from SMEs, and the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), whose effects on imports are beginning to be felt.

## Why it matters

Réunion's 2026 business season illustrates a challenge shared by all Indian Ocean island economies: how to remain competitive despite high structural costs, island-driven price premiums, and regulations designed thousands of kilometres away. The island's geostrategic position — often cited, rarely fully leveraged — will be central to the answers decision-makers must deliver in the months ahead.
