## A label that changes the game

Awarded by the Mission French Tech for 2026–2028, the *French Tech Capital* label recognizes cities and territories that have become reference tech hubs at the national level. For Reunion Island, it is official recognition of a maturing ecosystem: the island of 860,000 inhabitants is now positioned as a technology bridgehead between Africa and Asian markets, at the crossroads of the Indian Ocean.

In practical terms, the label unlocks doors: access to dedicated funding, increased visibility with international investors, and a prominent place at major global tech events.

## VivaTech 2026: five Reunionese startups in Paris

At VivaTech 2026 — Europe's leading tech conference — Reunion Island held a regional pavilion backed by the Regional Council, showcasing five startups. Among them: **AgentVox**, which builds AI conversational agents capable of automating complete business processes via a basic phone call — no app, no internet connection required. The innovation is designed for underconnected populations across the Indian Ocean, where millions remain excluded from the digital economy.

## The first French Tech Connect Overseas & Indian Ocean event

On June 18, 2026, French Tech La Réunion co-organized at VivaTech the very first *French Tech Connect Overseas & Indian Ocean* event, bringing together decision-makers, startups, and large corporations for two hours to create — in the words of French Tech La Réunion president Sarra Beldi Vencatachellum — "a genuine dialogue space between startups, large groups, investors and economic decision-makers."

Nine territories were represented: Reunion, Mayotte, Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, **Mauritius, and Madagascar**. More than **50 major companies and economic partners** attended, reflecting growing interest in these markets.

## The numbers behind overseas innovation

The event spotlighted data that challenges the outdated narrative of lagging territories: more than **750 overseas startups** are currently supported, sustaining **7,000 jobs** and driving over **€57 million** in mobilized investment. France's 2030 plan has separately allocated **€14 million** specifically to the Plan Innovation Outre-mer, of which Reunion Island is a primary beneficiary.

## Why it matters

Reunion Island holds a uniquely strategic geographic position: within three hours of Madagascar, Mauritius, the Comoros, and the Seychelles, it can become the natural tech hub for a region of 30 million people. The French Tech label, France 2030 funding, and the VivaTech momentum form a three-legged stool that could meaningfully accelerate that trajectory — provided the connections are converted into real business contracts.
