**The island of Réunion has taken a significant step in its digital strategy with the signing of the Digital Sector Contract 2026-2028\. Backed by €5.4 million in public funding — including €2.4 million from the national France 2030 programme — this framework commits public and private stakeholders to a coherent strategy for accelerating the digital transformation of Réunion's 8,000 small and medium-sized businesses.**

## Three Strategic Pillars

The Digital Sector Contract 2026-2028 is built around three complementary axes: upgrading digital skills across local businesses, accelerating startup creation in the tech, digital economy, and green economy sectors, and deepening digital usage in sustainable healthcare. Execution is shared between France Travail, La Réunion Développement, Digital Réunion, Solidarnum, and «La Réunion Connectée».

The Innovation AMI 2026 — a targeted call for applications — provides grants for proof-of-concept development and equity strengthening for qualifying startups. The scheme particularly targets early-stage ventures still validating their business model.

## Early Signals Are Encouraging

Early 2026 data confirms the sector's momentum. In January 2026, nine companies were created in computer programming in Réunion — a 28.6% increase on December 2025\. For context, August 2025 had recorded 18 tech company creations — itself a 50% year-on-year increase. The trajectory is clearly upward.

Broader employment trends are similarly positive: 500 new positions were created across all sectors between Q3 2024 and Q3 2025, with 300 in the private sector. Digital and value-added services represent a growing share of this growth.

## A Springboard Towards the African Continent

Réunion's geographic position, its telecom infrastructure, and its status as a European territory give it unique advantages as a tech hub bridging Europe and Africa. Several Réunionnais startups have already expanded to Madagascar, Mauritius, and continental Africa. The Digital Sector Contract aims to structure this momentum, giving local SMEs the tools to internationalise from Réunion.

## Why It Matters

In a department where unemployment hovers near 18%, the digital sector is one of the few that can rapidly generate skilled, well-paid jobs. This 2026-2028 contract — €5.4 million, 8,000 target businesses — is a bet on the future: that Réunion can become a leading player in the Indian Ocean digital economy.
