- Description: Unemployment at 19% (+3 pts YoY), 1,240 business failures over 12 months (+18%), public-sector jobs down by nearly 1,000: INSEE's Q2 2026 economic note paints a worrying picture of La Réunion's labour market.

Unemployment in La Réunion reached 19% of the active workforce in Q2 2026, up 3 percentage points year-on-year, according to INSEE's regional economic note published on 30 September. Business failures rose 18% over twelve months, signalling deterioration in the local economic fabric.

## A Fragmenting Labour Market

With 293,900 salaried workers recorded at end-June 2026, total salaried employment fell 0.2% on the quarter, after a meagre 0.1% bounce in Q1\. The headline figure masks divergent sector trends. Digital and ICT led with a 4.3% quarterly rise — roughly 200 new jobs — while retail (excluding temp work) gained 0.6%. Conversely, non-market services fell 0.7%, business services lost 0.6%, and construction shed 0.4% after a late-2025 rebound.

Public-sector employment accounted for most of the losses: -0.9% on the quarter and -1.1% year-on-year, erasing nearly 1,000 positions. The contraction reflects the knock-on effects of national budget austerity on France's overseas territories.

## Business Failures Jump

Between July 2025 and June 2026, La Réunion recorded 1,240 business failures — 190 more than in the prior year, a rise of 18%. The contrast with mainland France is stark: the national failure rate grew only 5% in the same period. This gap reflects the fragility of Réunion's business structures, squeezed by weak domestic demand and higher production costs.

New business registrations in Q2 2026 totalled 3,960, down 5% on the quarter. Manufacturing (+21%) and construction (+6%) held firm, but other services fell 9%.

## Faint but Real Positive Signals

Some indicators remain encouraging. Inflation stood at +1.5% year-on-year in June 2026, below the national rate of 1.8%, preserving some household purchasing power. Hotel occupancy in accommodation and food services rose 0.9% year-on-year. Paid hours in La Réunion rose 0.4% annually versus -0.7% nationally. Yet the 19% unemployment rate remains more than double the national figure of 8.3%, a persistent structural gap.

## Why It Matters

The hoped-for rebound in Réunion's economy has yet to materialise in employment. Rising failures combined with public-sector cuts are undermining the island's economic safety net. Without targeted support for struggling sectors and measures to stimulate local demand, the risk of a vicious cycle — unemployment, lower consumption, further failures — is real. The split between a growing digital sector and declining traditional services also points to a structural bifurcation that policymakers must address urgently.
