**Région Réunion has adopted its 2026 budget, pushing spending higher despite a challenging national fiscal backdrop. With €1.32 billion in payment credits and 53% earmarked for investment, the regional authority is backing ecological transition and major infrastructure to prepare the island's future.**

## A Growing Budget Against Headwinds

The Région Réunion's 2026 budget totals **€1.32 billion** in payment credits, with overall budgetary movements reaching €1.94 billion. Its structure marks a clear shift: **53% of spending goes to investment**, with 47% covering operating costs. Capital expenditure rises by **+22.7%** year-on-year. This bet comes despite a difficult national backdrop — weaker tax receipts and State grants still pending confirmation.

## Ecological Transition as the Top Budget Priority

Sustainable development and ecological transition jumps **+27.8%** to **€321 million**, becoming the largest sector in the budget. Two flagship projects lead the charge: a new **undersea communications cable** estimated at around **€90 million**, which will secure the island's digital connectivity and reduce disruption risk, and a future **maritime trades lycée (high school)** with an envelope of around **€80 million**, designed to build the talent base for Réunion's blue economy.

Human and social development also grows **+7.8%** to €278 million, while economic development receives €100 million (+2.2%).

## A Vehicule Tax Increase

To balance its accounts, the Région has raised the vehicle registration tax rate from **€57 to €60 per fiscal horsepower**. In practice, registering a 4-CV vehicle will now cost **€240** instead of €228\. A modest increase in absolute terms — but symbolically significant on an island where the car remains the primary mode of transport.

Opposition representatives criticised what they described as « insufficient support for businesses » given the persistent cost-of-living pressure, flagging a disconnect between the Region's major infrastructure ambitions and the immediate needs of the local economic fabric.

## Why It Matters

This budget sends a clear signal: Réunion is investing in its future autonomy — digital connectivity, maritime training, energy transition — rather than simply managing day-to-day operations. For local business players and investors, the surge in the ecological transition envelope opens real opportunities in renewable energy, sustainable construction and digital infrastructure. The undersea cable, in particular, will determine the island's competitive position within the Indian Ocean regional economy for the next decade.
