Despite a political and financial climate described as «unprecedented» for French regions, Réunion's regional council has adopted its 2026 budget at **€1.06 billion**. The authority is maintaining an ambitious investment stance: capital expenditure reaches **€541 million, up 22.7%** compared to the previous year.

## Four Priority Spending Axes

The budget is structured around four main priorities. **Ecological transition** takes the largest allocation at **€341.8 million**, followed by transversal missions (€341.5M), human and social development (€280.9M), and economic development (€99.8M). The New Coastal Road and the construction of new high schools are among the key projects absorbing a significant share of capital spending.

## Constrained Financial Context, Sustained Ambition

Vice-President Patrick Lebreton noted at the plenary session that the Region is operating in an environment of significant financial uncertainty, compounded by national political turbulence. The authority has not ruled out additional borrowing to honour its long-term commitments. Separately, the Réunion Departmental Council also approved a 2026 budget of **€1.3 billion**, up **1.6%**.

Combined, the island's two major public authorities are mobilising over **€2.3 billion** in public funding for 2026, with shared emphasis on infrastructure investment and environmental transition.

## Why It Matters

In a territory where unemployment exceeds 19% and economic growth remains subdued, the 22.7% rise in regional investment is one of the few positive signals in the 2026 economic landscape. Public capital spending is a direct driver of activity in construction, digital services and vocational training. For Réunion businesses, the adoption of these two budgets secures an essential volume of public contracts for the next twelve months.
