Réunion Island is opening a new window to Asia. Air Austral has finalised a Special Prorate Agreement with Bangkok Airways, allowing travellers from Réunion to reach eight new South-East Asian destinations via Bangkok — on a single booking, with through-checked baggage.

## Eight Destinations, One Ticket

The agreement covers destinations across three countries: Thailand (Koh Samui, Lampang, Sukhothai, Trat), Laos (Luang Prabang) and Cambodia (Phnom Penh, Siem Reap). These add to existing connections via Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Phuket and Krabi. The key improvement is seamless travel: passengers book a single journey from Réunion to their final destination, with no need to collect baggage during transit.

According to Air Austral management, the partnership fits a clear strategy: "We leverage partners to enrich our network and offer ever more travel possibilities to our customers." This approach lets the Réunion-based carrier extend its geographic reach without committing additional aircraft or resources.

## A Boost for Tourism and Business

For Réunion companies looking toward Asia, this agreement makes connectivity meaningfully easier. Luang Prabang and Siem Reap are high-growth tourist destinations, and Phnom Penh is a rapidly developing economic capital. Indirect service from Saint-Denis-Gillot now becomes far more accessible, without the hassle of multiple ticket changes.

Announced on 7 August 2026, the deal brings the total number of Asian destinations accessible on a single booking from Réunion to more than ten.

## Why It Matters

In a context where Réunion's air connectivity remains a strategic concern — the island challenged a 21% airport fee increase in June 2026 — this commercial partnership represents a smart response: broadening the offering without adding to operating costs. South-East Asia is also a priority target for inbound tourism to Réunion, a market that remains largely untapped.
