Réunion is betting on its airport to strengthen its role as gateway to the Indian Ocean. With €50 million invested in the reconfiguration and extension of the departures terminal, Roland-Garros is entering an ambitious transformation aimed at pushing annual passenger capacity beyond 3 million — up from the current 2.7 million — while embarking on an unprecedented green transition.

## An Expanded Terminal, Broader Routes

Since September 2025, new director Thomas Dubus has been driving a three-pronged strategy. The first pillar: stronger connectivity. Direct routes to Africa, Asia, and India are under study, in close partnership with Air Austral. The goal is clear — to make Roland-Garros a regional hub capable of competing with Mauritius and the Maldives for passenger flows across the zone.

The second pillar concerns infrastructure. The departures terminal extension works, fitted with EDS3 security technology and expanded commercial spaces, are due for completion before 2028\. The airport already produces 30% of its electricity through renewable sources, and two major projects are underway: a photovoltaic farm with hydrogen storage and a SWAC system (seawater air conditioning).

## Level 4+ Carbon Certification

Roland-Garros is targeting Airport Carbon Accreditation at level 4+, one of the highest in the world. A distinction that increasingly matters for airlines subject to decarbonisation targets and choosing their stopovers accordingly.

## Why This Matters

A growing airport means a more dynamic local economy: more direct routes mean fewer connections via Paris or Dubai, cheaper tickets and more accessible tourism. For Réunion businesses, a strengthened hub streamlines freight exchanges and reduces logistics costs across the entire Indian Ocean region.
